Shang Street Park, Cairns

Brief from Council

(directly quoted from the invitation to Tender document)

  1. Total budget for the supply and installation of the playground, including rubber softfall, gravel subgrade, and any required concrete edging, is not to exceed $80,000 (excluding GST).
  2. The equipment target age group is from toddler up to say 12 years, and without limiting your 'creative spirit', is envisaged to include a range of climbing equipment, swings, slide, adventure playgrounds, etc.
  3. Details of the proposed rubber softfall system are to be provided with your proposal including details of pavement requirements and any necessary subsoil drainage system.
  4. Most of the local residents come from a diverse range of cultural backgrounds and vandalism has sometimes been an issue, hence selection of equipment that can withstand 'heavy use' is required. It is important that this issue is given particular attention to minimise ongoing maintenance costs.
  5. A selection of options within the budget allowed are requested to enable a variety of options to be considered. 3D montages of your proposals are to be provided. A minimum of 2 options is requested.

Outcome

  1. Out of three options provided to Council for review, the final all-ages playground that was chosen included 5 main elements plus a rubber undersurfacing design that added to the overall play value of the area.
  2. Freestanding equipment such as the rocker and swing allows for play by the youngest users without older children interrupting their play experiences
  3. Older children can express themselves and test their abilities on the more challenging events such as the freestanding rock wall and Whirly Gig Spinner
  4. The main structure has a free-flow design that incorporates a young end (slide, bridge, under platform cubby & stairs) and a older end (roman rings, chin up bars and pommel walk). We chose to use Playspace’s Aluminium Round Post system to minimise the risk of rust in the long term – it also provides a robust looking unit
  5. All equipment was chosen on its durability within an environment prone to vandalism and “heavy use”
  6. Rubber undersurfacing was laid according to the proposed marine design to enhance the play experience
